Any experience level, including novice, is welcome!

The County Grounds is a major Migratory Bird Route or Flyway for southeastern Wisconsin, following the Menomonee River with supportive forests and open fields. Loss of habitat and development continue to impact wildlife in the County Grounds. Identifying and counting bird populations is important to document the diverse treasures that we have.

Habitat Restoration - Buckthorn Slaying

Five Remaining Buckthorn Removal Events This Fall!

We had an incredible 6 buckthorn removal events this fall with nearly 50 volunteers (many repeat volunteers). Volunteers included students from Tosa East, UWM, Marquette University High School, DSHA, and Brookfield Central.
Together, we've made a visible difference.

County Grounds Park was also recently featured in a
Facebook post by the Milwaukee County Parks Department. That event also included 6 people from the US Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development Ecosystem Services Branch. That team leads social-environmental research on community capacity in areas of environmental cleanups in the Great Lakes region. It was an honor to have them join us.

Thanks to Danielle P and Caitlin R

for coordinating and leading these events!

Buckthorn Piles

Scientists like Suzanne Simard advocate that there is a hidden world beneath the soil, where trees communicate and help each other through complex fungal networks called mycorrhizae. This underground system enables trees to share nutrients, water, and even warning signals about pests or environmental stress.

This topic has caused some to wonder if the well-intended buckthorn piles in County Grounds Park could be disrupting the mycorrhizae, and if that offsets the wildlife habitat or other benefits of the piles.

We are seeking a group who may want to consider possible futures for the buckthorn piles. This would be done in coordination with Milwaukee County Parks, just like all our initiatives. If you are interested in being a leader or volunteer for this, please send an email to friendsofcountygroundspark@gmail.com

Forest Tour

Jim Thielke gave an excellent tour in October, and we are grateful for his efforts in continuing the Sanctuary Woods Forest Tour, a legacy his grandfather, Charlie Mitchell, helped create. The tour had a diverse group of participants, ranging from 8 to 96 years old! We got to see some magnificent, ancient trees and learned a great deal along the way!
